Republic of Karelia — Land of Lakes, Forests, and Ancient Legends

1. Geographical Location
Located in northwestern Russia, between the White Sea and the border with Finland. This is a land of thousands of lakes (more than 60,000) and endless taiga forests. The famous Ladoga and Onega lakes are its gems.

2. Climate
Temperate, transitional from maritime to continental. Summers are short but can be warm, ideal for rafting and hiking. Winters are snowy, mild (average temperatures -8...-12°C), creating a magical atmosphere for dog sledding and snowmobiling. The famous white nights illuminate nature from May to July.

3. Population and Culture
A unique Russian union of Karelians, Veps, and Finns. This is reflected in the architecture (the wooden churches of Kizhi), the epic "Kalevala," the cuisine (kalitki pastries, fish from northern lakes), and the hospitality of the locals. Karelia is a place of power and tranquility, where ancient petroglyphs coexist with active monasteries.

Murmansk Region — The Kingdom of the Arctic and the Northern Lights

1. Geographical Location
The largest region in the European north of Russia, washed by the Barents Sea. It is home to the Kola Peninsula with its peculiar mountain ranges (Khibiny), countless lakes, and fjord-like sea coasts. The main gateway to the Arctic.

2. Climate
Subarctic, moderated by the warm North Atlantic Current. Winters are long but less severe in the coastal areas than in Siberia (the average January temperature in Murmansk is around -10°C). Summers are short and cool. The main wonders are the polar night (December) and the polar day (June), and from autumn to spring — a high chance of seeing the northern lights.

3. Population and Culture
The land of respected sailors, fishermen, and inhabitants of the Arctic. The culture of the indigenous Sami people is preserved here, with their reindeer herding traditions, vibrant patterns, and shamanic rituals. The center of the region is Murmansk, the world's largest city above the Arctic Circle and the home port of the nuclear icebreaker fleet.

Day 1

Welcome ritual: blessing with herbs + learning the first phrases in Livvi-Karelian (greetings, gratitude). Interactive village tour with a story about the life, traditions, and culture of the Ludic Karelians. Stories and tales from local residents;
Visit to the museum of ancient Sami cult structures — labyrinths and totems;
Musical performance and masterclass with songs in the Karelian language and playing national musical instruments;
Masterclass on playing national musical instruments — shepherd's horns, kantele, jouhikko;
Tea time in a village house with a real samovar heated with pine cones and homemade Karelian pastries;
Traditional dinner with local residents;
Overnight stay in a cozy, ancient guesthouse.

Day 2

• Arrival in the village of Kinerma
Guided tour with a local resident guide, story about the history of the settlement;
Visit to the active village chapel of the Smolensk Icon of the Mother of God, 18th century;
Examination of historical interiors in a Karelian house;
Tea time with traditional Karelian pastries, typically including *kalitka* with millet, a sweet pie, and oatmeal pancakes with wild berry jam;
Meeting with a local hostess — a native Karelian in the 15th generation, who tells about the daily life of peasants, the Soviet-Finnish War, and the place of Karelians in the modern world;
Free time;
Traditional dinner with local residents;
Overnight stay in a cozy, ancient guesthouse.

Day 3

• Arrival in the village of Rubchoila
Lunch with national cuisine dishes in a real peasant house. The hosts talk about the traditions of Karelian cuisine and the specifics of village life;
Walk through the sacred grove (hiisi) — learning "forest etiquette" (why you shouldn't whistle at sunset).
Performance by a folk ensemble with songs in Karelian and Russian;
Walk through the village, which has preserved 18th-century houses, the Chapel of John the Baptist, a ritual grove, and a cemetery;
• Transfer to the village of Voknavolok
Traditional dinner and sauna;
Accommodation in a spacious house on a farmstead near the village of Voknavolok, two people per room.

Day 4

• Village of Voknavolok
Morning ritual: "Awakening to the Kantele" – simple melodies to greet the day. Exercise in the Karelian language and a hearty breakfast;
Excursion to the Karelian farmstead Taipele, and then to a unique waterfall between two lakes;
Visit to the Köunyas waterfall. This amazing place inspires creativity and gives vital energy;
Lunch is organized right near the rapids. Ukha (fish soup) and tea cooked over a campfire;
In the evening, dinner, conversations over a cup of tea from a samovar, and a sauna are planned.

Day 5

• Exercise in the Karelian language and a hearty breakfast;
• Transfer to Venehjärvi (26 kilometers);
Stop by the lake for tea;
• Transfer to the village of Voinitsa (36 km). Hike to the chapel, visit the monument to the rune singer Vaassila Kielavyäinen, one of the main rune singers whose meeting was fateful in the history of creating the epic poem Kalevala;
Creative performance of runes in the Karelian language;
Masterclass on improvisation on the kantele;
• Return to the guest house;
Dinner and sauna.

Day 6

• Breakfast and packing;
Visit to the rune-singing settlement of Kalevala and the village of Haikola;
The settlement began to be called Kalevala in 1961 in honor of the 100th anniversary of the publication of the epic poem "Kalevala."
The village of Haikola is the birthplace of the Karelian classic writer Ortjo Stepanov. He wrote most of his works in this very village.

• Gastronomic masterclass on preparing signature dishes of Karelian cuisine and dinner with local residents

• Departure to the Kivach waterfall, walk along a picturesque forest trail, visit the arboretum, which is called Karelia in miniature

• Visit to the residence of Talvi Ukko – the Karelian Father Frost. Meeting his friends and helpers, immersion into the culture of the Sami and the Far North. Interactive program, meeting the wizard himself and animators.
• Lunch
• Visit to a room entirely finished with shungite. The mineral is known for its healing properties – here tourists can restore their energy and get a boost of vitality, and specialists will explain how to properly use the stone and how it works.
• Arrival in Petrozavodsk, walk along the Onega Embankment

• Arrival in Olonets.
• Visit to the Livvi-Karelian Museum, during which tourists will get acquainted with the legendary hero Morozets Pakkaine and learn about the New Year traditions of the people.
• Lunch
• Arrival in the village of Mandrogi. Guided tour to immerse yourself in the history of these places and houses.
• Visit to the Alexander-Svirsky Monastery
• Return to Moscow/St. Petersburg

Visit to the Murmansk Regional Museum of Local Lore with an exhibition on the history and culture of the Sami and Pomors

Trip outside the city (in clear weather) for the first "hunt" for the northern lights.
*A real night expedition to the most picturesque and dark corners of the Kola Peninsula, far from city lights. The "hunt" for the brightest aurora will be conducted using forecast maps to select the ideal viewing angle.
**The northern lights are a natural phenomenon dependent on weather conditions. Its appearance on a specific night cannot be guaranteed. Therefore, the "hunt" is designed for several attempts.
After the "hunt," dinner in nature with traditional dishes and stories from local residents.

• Visit to the excursion and tourist center "Snow Village"

Active games (lasso throwing, archery, Sami football);
Unique objects and artifacts of the Sami people;
Feeding reindeer and huskies (you will have the opportunity to take photos and videos);

• Departure by reindeer sled (or snowmobile with sled) to a reindeer herders' camp in the tundra (real or organized for guests).
Participation in camp life: helping to feed the reindeer, opportunity to try driving a sled, photos in traditional Sami clothing (malitsa, yary).
• Lunch at the camp: ukha (fish soup) cooked over a campfire, stroganina (shaved frozen meat/fish) from reindeer or fish.
• Stories by the campfire: Reindeer herders will tell about their craft and the legends of the tundra.
• Return to Lovozero.
• Dinner
• Free time/sauna (optional).

Day 5

• Transfer to the village of Teriberka — a former Pomor settlement.
• Introduction to Pomor heritage: their unique architecture (wooden crosses by the sea - "Pomor crosses"), survival skills, fishing.
• Viewing abandoned ships, a stone beach, waterfalls (in winter they freeze into bizarre sculptures).
• Winter trekking to the shore of the Arctic Ocean is possible (depending on weather conditions).
• Dinner at a local cafe with dishes made from cod or haddock.
• Overnight in a guest house.

Day 6

• Breakfast and check-out
• Visit to a husky farm in the area. Dog sledding. Interacting with the dogs, story from the musher.
• Masterclass on Pomor cuisine (making tyurya, baking shangi).
• Return to Murmansk.
• Farewell dinner at a restaurant with northern cuisine: reindeer meat, cloudberries, royal fish (muksun, whitefish).
• Return to Moscow/St. Petersburg

Day 6: Transfer to the Murmansk Region – Meeting the Sami

• Transfer to Lovozero (transfer included).
• Accommodation in a Sami guest house.
• Meeting with reindeer herders, feeding reindeer, photos in traditional clothing.
• Masterclass on making a Sami amulet.
• Dinner with reindeer meat and fish.

• Moscow (Sheremetyevo / Domodedovo / Vnukovo) — main arrival point, with direct flights

Train and Car

• Petrozavodsk: train schedule + route St. Petersburg → Petrozavodsk via highway A-121 (≈400 km, 5–6 hours).
• Murmansk: "Arktika" train + route Petrozavodsk → Murmansk via highway P-21 (≈900 km, ≈12 hours).
• Recommendation: for travel between regions, it is optimal to choose air travel or train (depending on the season and group schedule).

Internal Transfers and Support

- During the winter season, access may be limited due to snowdrifts.

In winter – it is recommended to dress warmly, have waterproof footwear, and thermal underwear.

In summer – take into account the presence of mosquitoes, have repellents and comfortable footwear for walking.

Communication: mobile network and internet may be unavailable in remote villages and the tundra.

Currency: rubles are accepted everywhere; cards – in cities; cash – in villages.
